Although it is only 7 minutes away from the island’s center, the village is both quiet and offers access to a vast arrey of services, such as restaurants, coffee shops, a food market, liquor stores and grocery stores etc.

You can swim at the two beaches of the village. The first one has coarse gravel and is located 300 meters away from the “Torretta Villas” complex, and the second one has pebble stones and is located 800 meters away.

The complex owes its name to the fortress Torretta also known as Alexander.

The fortress was constructed at the edge of the peninsula which enclosed Alexandros’ Salt Pans from the south, for defensive purposes.

It is located on the southern entrance of the ferry crossing to Lefkada, in the most prominent position of the island towards Xyromero, a stone’s throw away from the villages of Akarnania, Peratia, and Plagia.

This is where Ali Pasha had encamped in order to conquer Lefkada for its strategic position. It was renovated from the ground up by the Russians, who named it after Tsar Alexander.

The designs belonged to the Russian colonel engineer Gakios and included 4 canons that were operated by 25 Russian artillerymen.

In the early 20th century, the opening of the new Lefkada canal led to a series of projects which included the separation of a part of the Salt Pans peninsula, turning the fortress into a small island.
